Problems and Solutions Within the Choreographic Process

So far in our choreographic process we have encountered a few different problems and come up with ways to resolve these issues.

For example, in the bad memory section in around the middle of the piece when we transfer from a diagonal line going across the stage to lines of 3, 4 and 2, we discovered that some collisions were occurring between Olivia and Taylor. To solve this problem, we made a slight change to the formation, Olivia and Taylor swapped positions with each other which allowed movements to flow more seamlessly creating a more visually pleasing performance for the audience.

Moreover, spacing was another problem that arose. Near the beginning of our piece, in the nostalgic section when we incorporate the choreographic device of split focus, it was brought to our attention that some people, myself included, were having some trouble with transitioning from their position here to their next one due to them having to travel too much of a distance in a moderately short amount of time. Consequently, this resulted in things looking slightly hectic and untidy. To fix this dilemma we thought about where our next position was, for example stage left or right, and repositioned ourselves so that the people who had to go the furthest in one direction were now much closer, shortening their pathway. The outcome of this was that the section looked no longer in disarray.

Furthermore, with regards to the choreographing process itself we were encouraged to improve our time management skills and to try to teach all of the choreography first so that people have a good idea as to what they have to do. We started the session off quite slowly, trying to perfect the smaller details when in reality it would have been better use of our time to get through the choreography. Therefore, in our future choreography lessons, when Gabby, Portia and I teach the group our section, we will definitely try to have this approach and be as time efficient as we can to make the class as productive as possible. Another factor that contributed to us having be particularly careful with our time is the loss of a choreography class due to the Coronavirus pandemic, losing just an hour of studio time has quite a significant impact as, in order to make progress, we all need to be together physically in the same room so that, amongst other reasons, we are able to see how things look all together.

  1. Great blog Eleanor! I loved how clear and descriptive it was. It might be nice to explain how you would use this information going forward in the first two points like you did in the second? Well done! :)

  2. We can get an idea for where your group piece is going. Could you use the full names rather than nicknames and do a quick spell check on the routine. If there any images you could draw for us to show the issues and the solutions. Maybe the original choreography/spacing in black and the changes overlaid in red so we can see what you are talking about? In terms of time management has anything else affected your time in the studio thinking of the current climate?

  3. Well done Eleanor, this is another great blog! You were really descriptive and spoke about a variety of problems we faced in rehearsal and how we decided to resolve them. You could expand on how going forward you you would think spacing before teaching so that it it reduces the time taken in the lesson, and maybe include some visual drawings of your plan :)

  4. Lovely blog, you really explain the problems well and you explained how you resolved them as well. I think to improve you could talk about how you could avoid these problems in the future and prevent them from becoming a problem again.

  5. Hi Eleanor, I really like how you have structured this blog. Perhaps at the end say how in the future you will try avoiding problems such as time management.
